paper with machine embroidery

Image
I chose to explore the northern souls aspect of the scooter scene. I printed off the words to a northern soul song and then wet it. While wet I torn it in several pieces. When dry I then arranged them in a way that you can still see the words but very disjointed. I then chose a bright thread to contrast with the black and white and stitched them back together. Really pleased with this outcome, like the fragmented, patchy outcome with the loose threads adding another visual dimension.   Will continue to expand on this to produce my final major piece, as I feel that I can expand on this technique but also bring in elements of the previous paper/machine embroidery aspects to create a large wall piece. I will create small A4 pieces (due to limited resources at home and only having an A4 printer). These will then be machine stitched back together with added hand embroidery/ embellishment where required.

experiment with printed words and machine embroidery

Image
I experimented with printing words onto a page from a magazine using my printer. I choose the words to a northern soul song that has a lot of meaning for me. I then machine embroidered over the top using different coloured threads. Was very pleased at the outcome of this, it brings in the northern soul element of the scooter scene but adds another visual dimension with the embroidery threads hanging loose at the bottom.

mixed media - paper collage with machine embroidery

Image
Here I experimented with machine embroidery over a paper collage. I like the way that the machine sewing threads are left loose at the bottom of the piece. I experimented with this technique and used a page from the TV magazine overlapped with words of parts of scooters stitched onto it. I then added with pen the word 'Whitby'. This was to link the image together, there should have been a scooter rally at Whitby this Easter but was cancelled due the Corona Virus. This could be taken forward by using a scootering magazine for the background.

'all roads lead to pasta' - mono print with collage

Image
I like the colourful, quirky nature of this piece. The mono printing was completed back at university, I used an image from a magazine and then my photograph. All paper based.

photgraphy collage with hand embroidery - on paper

Image
I decided to experiment more with hand embroidery on paper. This mixed media piece has hand embroidery at the bottom and also the top right. The words are taken from a scootering magazine.   I think this works well, the combination of the photograph with the abstract images at the top. Will explore this further by changing the image at the top to see how it changes the overall feel of the work.

hand embroidery - images from the scooter scene

Image
Three hand embroidery's depicting the scooter scene, with the scooter, Dr Martens and northern soul dancer.    I chose to embroidery on 3 different coloured backgrounds to see how the overall images looked. I am pleased with the outcome of all, very simple designs but capture the overall scene. I will frame these embroidery's in the future, as I feel that they belong together as part of a collection.

embroidery experiments - mixed media

Image
Mixed media - black and white printed collage with hand embroidery. Like the concept of the viewer having to struggle to see the scooter image, with one image upside down to add to the confusion.   Close up view    Mono print, ripped scooter magazine with hand embroidery Feel that this image isn't strong enough although feel like this is the beginning of a new avenue to explore. I made a number of mono prints to experiment with, think the concept of adding the scooter article from a scootering magazine brings the link between the image and the scooter scene in general. Need to try this concept with machine embroidery.        Hand embroidery on cotton fabric. Enjoyed creating this, strong use of colours and the distorted image provides a contemporary feel on an otherwise quite traditional medium.

Mixed media - vintage cotton fabric with hand embroidery on black and white printed paper.   Love this concept. think the hand embroidery adds texture and interest to the image, will experiment further perhaps with a smaller vintage print behind as a bit overpowering and doesn't highlight the embroidery.

New research

Image
Mixed media collage - hand made paper with lyrics from northern soul songs, hand embroidery on top. Fabric image with embroidery threads attached. Interesting concept using the hand made paper. Love the hand made paper with the northern soul lyrics imbedded. Not sure how I could recreate this now at home as I like the concept of the words been slightly ripped/half hidden, so the viewer has to really look at the image to work out what it says. Also it ties in the link between the scooter scene and the northern soul scene.  Possibly a paper collage using ripped up images/words overlapping each other? Overall I don't think this image works, wrong colour background too overpowering, may of worked better with a more muted background?

Black and white printed original photograph with hand sewn embroidery thread. This was my first experiment into hand embroidery into paper. Very pleased with the outcome and will expand and experiment more
